Roland Burris' response to my concern over Elena Kagan's Nomination

Thank you for your views and opinions regarding President Obama’s nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.

Solicitor General Elena Kagan began her remarkable career in law graduating with honors from Harvard School of Law. She then clerked for Abner Mikva of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and Justice Thurgood Marshall, who was the Solicitor General. She joined the faculty of the University of Chicago Law School as an assistant professor in 1991, and became a tenured professor four years later. Solicitor General Kagan also served as Associate White House Counsel for President Bill Clinton from 1995 to 1999. She held a dual position as Deputy Assistant as well as Deputy Director for President Clinton’s Domestic Policy. In 2003, Solicitor General Kagan was the first woman to serve as Dean of Harvard Law School. When confirmed to serve as Solicitor General last year, she received strong bipartisan support.

In her wide-ranging career, Solicitor General Kagan developed a firsthand understanding of our government and its operation. Her nomination is based on the experience, integrity, and a dedication to justice served. It is with great pleasure that I welcome the nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan to the United States Supreme Court, and I will work closely with my Senate colleagues to ensure her swift confirmation.

I will diligently continue to listen to Illinoisans views and opinions about matters before Congress, the concerns of our communities, and the issues facing Illinois and the nation. My job is not about merely supporting or opposing legislation; it is also about bridging the divide that has paralyzed our nation's politics.

Sincerely,

Roland W. Burris
United States Senator
