$20,000 reward to find cabbie who dragged and killed man

DanFirkins125mug.jpgFriends of a graduate student who died after being dragged by a cab are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the taxi driver.

Witnesses say Daniel Firkins was leaning in a window of the taxi and arguing with the driver when the cab took off on May 14, dragging him for a block before running over his legs near his home in the 1600 block of North Honore Street in the Bucktown neighborhood. He died Saturday.

His friends -- described by his father David Firkins as "true young career-oriented guys at the height of their performing ability in life" -- raised the $20,000 in hopes the public can help Chicago police find the cab driver.
"I'm a big believer that we the people have chosen to enact laws to live by. . .We have to do our part," David Firkins said. "We have to help the police."

No one was in custody this morning, according to Chicago Police spokesman John Mirabelli.

If the reward money goes unclaimed, Firkins said a scholarship fund in his son's name will be set up. "I think knowing Danny, it would be for a kid who wanted to go to college, who didn't have the money," Firkins said.

A full-time MBA student at the University of Chicago and a die-hard Cubs fan, the 32-year-old Firkins moved to Chicago shortly after graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

He loved the city, its nightlife and sports, his parents said. Two years ago, he ran in the Chicago Marathon after training for months.

He grew up on a farm in Kirkland, a town of about 1,500 near Rockford. He was popular for his ability to sell just about anything -- raffle tickets or political campaigns -- and win over hearts, his father has said.

He mowed the lawn of a disabled neighbor for free. He often came home hungry after he had given his lunch money to a friend, and he escorted a girl who couldn't find a date to a homecoming dance.

Firkins worked as a trader for a stock firm for a few years before the firm downsized last fall and laid him off, his father said.

He wasn't afraid of big-city crime despite his small-town upbringing, his father said. A month ago, he earned the nickname "Batman" from neighbors after he chased a teenager who burglarized about a dozen homes with a bunch of other youths on his street, his father said, adding that his son at one time also stopped a mugger who stole an elderly woman's belongings.

Anyone with information about the investigation into Daniel Firkins' death should call the Chicago police Major Accident Investigation unit at (312) 745-4521.
